Why we are building this.
Schools do work that matters more than almost anything else, on software that rarely repays the effort of using it. That is the whole of the argument. The registrar, the business manager and the head of house who noticed something was wrong deserve tools as good as the job they are doing.
What is available to them falls into three groups. Some systems are old: specified before the cloud, and it shows in each screen. Some are still being built, and ask a school to take the roadmap on trust. The rest fit only after so much customisation that the customisation becomes the thing you maintain, and the thing that breaks when the vendor updates.
We wanted a third option: modern, flexible, and honest about its edges. A student information system should not assume it is also your payroll, your marketing platform and your fundraising database. Software that tries to be everything is mediocre at most of it, and it quietly locks you out of tools that are better at their one job. Kestrel does the student record properly and hands the rest to systems chosen for that purpose.
